Thionyl Chloride

Thionyl Chloride

Thionyl chloride (SOCl2) is a colorless to pale yellow, fuming, and highly corrosive liquid with a pungent odor, primarily used as a versatile chlorinating agent in organic synthesis. It efficiently converts carboxylic acids to acid chlorides and alcohols to alkyl chlorides, with by-products (SO2 and HCl) that are gaseous and easily removed, simplifying purification. With a boiling point of 79°C, it is also utilized in manufacturing pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and in lithium-thionyl chloride batteries.

Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI) is a database and ontology of molecular entities focused on ‘small’ chemical compounds, that is part of the Open Biomedical Ontologies effort. The term “molecular entity” refers to any constitutionally or isotopically distinct atom, molecule, ion, ion pair, radical, radical ion, complex, conformer, etc., identifiable as a separately distinguishable entity.
